ADT Home Security
ADT Home Security now protects Six million U.S. residents. It is arguably the best-known brand of home security system in the country.
The ADT Home security story began in 1874, with the advent and national expansion of Samuel Morse’s new invention, the telegraph. The American District Telegraph Company (ADT) was the result of the merger of 57 distinct local telegraph services.
During the 1890’s ADT designed call boxes and multiple-signal electrically driven home and office protection. With this ADT home security system business security staff could contact the ADT home security-monitoring center directly on a predetermined schedule. Failure to make the ADT home or business security call advised the monitoring center of the need for the dispatch of emergency services. As of 1899 50 U.S. cities offered these ADT home and business security electric systems, while over 500 towns were still using ADT home security message services.
In 1901 ADT, the ADT home security precursor, became part of Western Union, although the 57 various locations operated independently of each other and uniformity of services, operations and systems was sorely needed. To accomplish this the messenger services separated from the ADT security services. The latter developed into ADT home security.
In the years between 1910 and 1930 the ADT name came be known countrywide as synonymous with home security. In addition to the originating security product, ADT home security added a line of burglary prevention, holdup and fire alarm products to its inventory. As technology advanced, ADT home security took innovative leaps ahead of its few competitors and became a household name.
During World War II, as able bodied males left their homes and spouses behind to fight on foreign shores, ADT home security became an ever more important part of the domestic landscape. It was at this time that ADT home security upgraded from a manual home security system to an automated one, which would automatically monitor for intrusion and send a signal to the ADT home security company to secure emergency help. At the same time the ADT home security folks created innovative products such as the Teletherm automated fire detection product, the Telewave automated anti-intrusion system and other automated home safety products.
1969 was the year ADT Home Security went public, with stock listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The firm started its trek into the international arena at about the same time.
In the beginning of the 1970 era innovative technological advances brought solid-state two-way proprietary communication to ADT home security. This was the beginning of the ADT home security automated monitoring centers. In 1974, as ADT celebrated its 100th birthday, the ADT home security call boxes were being replaced by strong computerized security bases. The 1980’s saw further innovation, ushering in the Unimode fire prevention system, and its CentraScan computerized security system. ADT home security advancements included its residential-focused Safewatch system. ADT home security centralized monitoring became the norm.
In 1987, ADT and its business and home security systems acquired a new owner, the Parsippany NJ-based Hawley Group, Ltd. The company became known as ADT Security Systems, Inc. The company was later sold to Tyco International Ltd.
