Do it Yourself Home Security

You’d probably be surprised at the number of do it yourself home security options you have. Let’s take a look.

The first do it yourself home security product is your own mind and attitude. Keep telling yourself one simple fact - that nine out of ten home intrusions could have been prevented. It’s important to remember, as you begin your do it yourself home security program, that a burglar has three enemies. They are time, light and noise. If your do it yourself home security program lights up your home’s exterior, makes it difficult and thus time consuming for a burglar to enter your home, and sets off a big noisy racket when an intrusion occurs, chances are excellent that intruder will look elsewhere to complete his or her burglary.

What you first want to do as you start planning your do it yourself home security is to look at your home with the eye and mind of a burglar. Ask yourself what would be the easiest entry points for an intruder. Once you’ve determined those points start your do it yourself burglar resistance campaign there.

If you have trees or shrubs that partially obscure the view from doors or windows trim them to increase visibility. Avoid or remove high fencing that keeps your yard invisible from neighborhood eyes. While this fence can give you privacy it can also keep a burglar from being seen by anyone else, thus encouraging the burglary. Install outside lighting that is mounted high enough to keep a burglar from reaching it and disabling it.

Burglars seldom attempt intrusion into homes that clearly will take them longer than four or five minutes to break into. There are a lot of household or easily acquired and installed products and items that you can use in your do it yourself home security campaign to make a burglar aware that entry into your home will take too long. Simple do it yourself home security precautions such as a nail, a screw, a padlock, a secure lock on each door and window (deadbolt locks on doors are recommended), window grating, or a bar or bolt across the entry can discourage and ultimately prevent intrusion.

Your do it yourself home security efforts must focus on noisemaking as well. Several easily purchased, inexpensive, easy to install home alarms include sirens, screeches, bells, whistles and other loud and frightening noises.

If your outside doors are thin, hollow or otherwise flimsy, part of your do it yourself home security must be replacing them with solid hard wood or metal doors whose thickness is at 1 3/4 inches. Make sure you have a solid doorframe as well and that the door securely fits that frame. You’ll want to install some sort of wide angle viewing apparatus or peephole in your door as well.

There is a lock for every imaginable type of window and your do it yourself home security program should include this installation. If you have a window that is double hung you can simply pin the upper and lower window frame together with a household nail.
